Lady Texans finish strong against St. Stephens

The Wimberley girls basketball team was able to bounce back from a rough loss to Harper as the Lady Texans rolled over the St. Stephens Spartans en route to a 71-32 win.

Wimberley improves their record to 10-8 overall.

In their loss to Harper, the Lady Texans couldn’t keep it close as the Longhorns won 60-33.

Lily Dela Rosa led the team in scoring with 13 points while Campbell Woodard finished with six points.

After the disappointing loss, the Lady Texans needed to bounce back as they returned home against the St. Stephen’s Episcopal School Spartans.

It was the bounce back Wimberley needed as they rolled to a 71-32 win.

Leading the team in scoring was Brooke Burcham with 26 points followed by Mackenzie Haston and Katie Schroeder with 10 points each.

Burcham and Dela Rosa both led the team in rebounding with seven rebounds each followed by Laney Hennesse and Raygan Pack with five.

According to Head Basketball Coach Caleb Hall, the ability to get pressure on the opposing guards was key to rebounding from the Harper loss.

“We play a whole lot better when we play defense,” Hall said. “That was something we struggled with at Harper. They have an extremely talented post player that gives us a lot of trouble, but it is not just the post player that hurts you because she has to get the ball from somebody… Tonight I felt like we put a lot of defensive pressure on their (St. Stephens) guards that took pressure off our posts. That was the adjustment we needed to make”

With the added pressure on the guards, the Lady Texans came away with 15 steals during the game.

Wimberley goes on the road to Lago Vista to battle the Vikings on Tuesday before hosting Boerne Geneva on Friday in Texan Gym.
