Lady Texans fall to Marble Falls

Wimberley High School’s Lady Texan basketball took to the hardwood last week against a former 5A team in the Marble Falls High School Mustangs.

The Mustangs field a team with 6’ 3” Lexie Edwards, whose presence in the paint posed problems for Coach Caleb Hall’s team.

“I am really proud of our effort. We went into the game intent to not allow her to affect what we do and I feel like we did that. The girls stuck to our plan but we came up short on fundamentals that could have made a difference,” Hall remarked.

Two of those fundamentals are playing defense with their feet instead of their hands and hitting free throws. The Lady Texans were called for reaching in or attempted blocks that fell awry, resulting in a call from officials. The Mustangs went to the free throw line 34 times, hitting 67%. Half of the Mustangs’ total 47 points were from free throws. The Lady Texans were 44% from the free throw line converting on 10 of 23.

“It comes down to taking care of the basketball because our turnovers put them in transition situations. That’s when fouls happen,” assistant coach Ryan Durkin added. “We preach ‘Don’t reach and don’t block,’ but we got caught trying to make it up against their transition tonight.”

“Before the game we talked about this being a possession game. They'll score on possessions and we’ll score on possessions but we cannot give them any extra possessions by turning the ball over, taking poor shots or committing reach in fouls,” Hall shared.

Campbell Woodward led Wimberley, scoring with 19, followed by 14 from point guard Lily Dela Rosa. The remaining eight points were spread among three players with Laney Hennessee scoring four.

“We played some good team defense tonight. We took four charges, which means we played well tonight, but we got reachy. We only gave up 14 points in the fourth quarter, but 11 of those points were free throws,” commented Hall. “We can’t get in early foul trouble, so we have to play more disciplined on defense.”

The Lady Texans fell to Marble Falls 47-41. At the time of press, they are scheduled to open district play against the Fredericksburg High School Billies on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Texan Gym. They face Davenport High School in their second district game — originally scheduled for last Friday — on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2:30 p.m. at Davenport.

During the Christmas break, the Lady Texans will join the rest of Texan athletics to host HoopFest at the gyms on Wimberley High and Danforth Junior High campuses from Dec. 28–30.
