Lady Texans basketball seniors add to their team

Throughout the 2021-2022 basketball season, the Lady Texans seniors added their own personal touch to their team on and off the court.

Helping the team to a 22-15 overall record, the senior group helped rebuild a program that did fall on hard times but is now a perennial playoff team in a tough district that has seen two of its members play for the state title.

As the seniors wrapped up their basketball career at Wimberley, for Head Coach Caleb Hall, each of the five seniors left their mark on the team.

After their Senior Night win over Canyon Lake, Hall went over how those five seniors left their impact on the team.

Mackenzie Ursha gave the team a boost of energy.

“She is our spark plug,” Hall said. “She is an extremely hard worker and a great kid. She always has a smile on her face. She is the girl you can count on to be the cheerleader on good days, bad days and tough days. She is always in a good mood and always brings the team up.”

Valeria Hayes is known for lifting her teammates’ spirits.

“She is the sunshine of the team,” Hall said. “Same type of personality, super sweet girl, and always looking out for the other girls. She is somebody that is easy to talk to and is a great teammate for the girls around her. She always has that great positive reassuraning attitude.”

Madelynne Rivera brings a work ethic and an undying love for basketball.

“She is one of my work horses,” Hall said. “She gets after it and plays hard. She has been playing basketball for a long time and wants to do well. She enjoys the game, truly loves the game, and loves to play hard. She is a physical player and a good senior leader.”

Mackenzie Haston is considered one of the leaders of the team that everyone sees as the team mom.

“She does a great job of leading in so many aspects of the game,” Hall said. “She is the organizer of the team, making sure everyone has their uniforms, making sure everyone is running the offense correctly or executing on defense. She blocks out when the shot goes up, does the little things right and makes it a point to take care of the little things. You need someone like that who is sort of the team mom on and off the court. She is very aware of what is going on, great court vision, and is a great leader on the team.”

Brooke Burcham helps bring joy and the lightheartedness to the team when times are down.

“She is the life of the party,” Hall said. “She is a girl who everyone enjoys being around with. She knows how to kick back, relax and have a good time. She knows how to make the girls laugh and you need someone on the team who can be that. She is a great scorer who surpassed 700 career points, but she has a great personality and brings a lightheartedness to the team that we need.”

“All in all a great group of seniors this season.”

Now it’s up to underclassmen and future Lady Texan basketball players to carry the torch and move the program forward and better than their predecessors had left it.
