Lady Texan volleyball sweeps Fredericksburg

In the start of the second round of district play, the Wimberley Lady Texans swept the rival Fredericksburg Lady Billies 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-19).

It was a rocky start for the Lady Texans in the first set as the two teams were neck and neck.. With the Lady Texans down 22-20 late in the set, Head Coach Stephanie Barthels called a timeout.

“I talked about our energy being dead,” Barthels said. “The stands are packed and it’s middle school night, we have to show these girls what we’re made of.”

The Lady Texans responded by going on a 5-1 run winning the first set 25-21.

The second set was another slow start for the Lady Texans as Wimberley trailed 11-5.

But following back to back Wimberley kills, the momentum swung in favor of the Lady Texans who responded by going on a massive 20-5 run to win the second set 25-16.

Following two slow starts in the first two sets, Wimberley flipped the script in the third set by not trailing the Billies and completing the sweep at 25-19.

After the game, the Lady Texans not only celebrated the win but also a huge milestone as the setter #3 Jesse Weeks recorded her 2,000th assist of her high school career.

“2000 assists feels awesome,” Weeks said. “It’s been a long time coming and knowing that my teammates and coaches are by my side is just an awesome feeling. When I hit it and everyone was cheering, it was just a great feeling. I have no weak link whenever I’m in so I know whoever I set she’s going to put the ball away” Weeks finished the game with six serving aces, eight digs and 19 assists.

Laney Hennessee led the way for the Lady Texans with 13 kills followed by Lilli Sandoval with eight kills.

The following Friday The Texans made the trip out to Davenport in a highly anticipated rematch with the Wolves featuring both teams being ranked in the Top Ten of the UIL 4A State Rankings.

Wimberley came out strong and hungry after losing there to Davenport at home a few weeks prior looking to take this one back.

The first set was a back and forth battle with 7 lead changes as Wimberley took the last lead change of the set and won 25-23.

The second set was another competitive match with Wimberley starting off slow going down 4-0.

Despite Wimberley finding a way back into the game late in the set, the Lady Texans could not pull off the comeback as the Wolves took the second set 25-23.

The third set was back and forth late in the set with 6 lead changes.

Following a few hitting errors by Wimberley along with a Davenport block, the Wolves found themselves in the driver’s seat to take set 3 giving them a 2-1 lead.

Though Wimberley battled hard in the fourth set, the Wolves put away the Lady Texans to take both the set and match at 3-1.

Wimberley will be back at home this Tuesday, Oct. 10 against Bandera High School before traveling to Boerne on Friday, Oct. 13.
