La Vernia knocks off Wimberley in a chaotic Bi-District clash

A wild and chaotic Bi-District showdown between the La Vernia and Wimberley softball teams ended in heartbreak for the Texans as the Bears won in walkoff fashion in a 8-7 victory.

The game was plagued by the recent rain storms, which caused massive changes to the game schedule.

Originally scheduled to be played at La Vernia with a 7 p.m. start time in a three-game series, the rainstorms forced the game to be moved to Wimberley due to the artificial turf fields at Texan Field.

With the game bumped to 5 p.m., the Texans and Bears squared off under the questionable weather.

After a scoreless first inning for the Texans, La Vernia scored the first runs of the game to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Texans scored their first runs in the third inning as Ashlyn Castro knocked home Reese Adams on a RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1.

Holding the Bears off the board in the top of the fourth, Wimberley looked to tie the game as Peyton Smith singled towards center field with one out.

But the thunderstorms struck again as the game was then delayed.

After a two-and-half-hour wait, with the rain pouring down hard as ever, the decision was made to change the three game series into a one game playoff that had to be finished by Saturday at 12 a.m.

The Texans finished the inning without scoring a run as La Vernia tacked on to their lead by adding another run to make a 3-1 game.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Texans once again made another comeback attempt as Ryhan Masur’s triple scored Smith to make a 3-2 game.

After the Texans couldn’t score Masur from third and holding off La Vernia in the bottom of the sixth, Wimberley had one more chance to retake the lead in the seventh and normally final inning.

Following an infield single, Juniper Daniel set the Texans in scoring position after taking second base following a wild pitch.

Castro then brought Daniel home with a single towards center field scoring the game tying run.

Castro then scored the leading run via an error by the La Vernia defense to allow the Texans to take a 4-3 lead.

However the Bears matched the Texans lead change in the bottom half of the inning as a passed ball allowed La Vernia to tie the game up at 4-4.

The Bears were unable to steal the win after a throw out at home by Katie Schroeder and a groundout ended the inning. The two teams headed into extra innings.

With the bases loaded and only one out, Addison Kirby hit a two-run RBI single to retake the lead at 6-4.

A groundout allowed Castro to score as Wimberley extended the lead at 7-4,

But La Vernia battled back as the Bears scored the final four runs of the game including a walk off RBI single to take home the Bi-District championship at 8-7 and end the Texans season.
