KAPS wraps up volleyball season

Though many may not know it, Katherine Anne Porter School in Wimberley provides a sports program as well as fundamental education. The Dragons recently wrapped up their Fall volleyball season and the basketball season is just beginning. Potentially, the school may add soccer to its offering in the near future---perhaps as soon as this year.

During the just-completed season, the team played nine matches and one tournament. The Dragons won four matches and lost four in league play Texas Association of Independent Organizations. They also played in one tournament where they competed in three games in pool play. KAPS beat Griffin 2-1 then lost to FEAST 0-2 and Headwaters 0-2 while finishing third in pool play. During this past season, they also played East Austin College Prep.

The team consisted of 16 girls in grades nine to twelve. According to Coach Jay Myers, “Senior Arianna Núñez led the team in blocks and kills and brought great aggression, energy, and attitude every night. Brishen Newton, also a senior, impressed me with her positive energy and her efficiency. She has developed great skills that allow her to perform consistently with few errors. Our best receiver, she constantly encouraged her teammates and showed a great attitude.”

Coach Myers went on to compliment Junior Summer Myles, the team captain. “She lead with her work ethic, positive attitude, and communication. Then, “Dusti Butler impressed with her graceful adaptability the coach said. “By playing outside hitter, opposite hitter, setter, and libero, she allowed us to adapt to many circumstances. She is a great team-mate and encour- ager.”

“Freshman Camille Valencia was injured in the game against EACP in the middle of the season when she broke her foot”, Coach Myers related. “Despite that handicap, she continued to attend practices and games. She always provided a great example of commitment, character, and resilience.”
