Junior wins state golf title, team finishes fourth

The Wimberley High School golf team finished fourth in Conference 4A at the State Golf Tournament held at The Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.

The team was led by junior Jaxon Donaldson, who won his second 4A State Golf Individual Championship. Donaldson shot a two-under par 70 on the first day of competition and followed that with a six under 66 on day two to win by four strokes over silver medalist Colin Price of Godley High School.

Donaldson won the 4A title as a freshman in 2021 and was silver medalist in 2022. Donaldson’s efforts this year tied two 4A state golf records. His 66 on Tuesday was equal to the record for lowest second round score (Gaven Lane, Argyle High School - 66, 2022) and his overall score of eight under par 136 tied the conference record for lowest overall score (Gaven Lane, Argyle HS - 136, 2022).

Also counting toward the Texans’ team score was freshman Hollis Eckols, who shot a two-day total of 154 (83, 71) that placed him in a tie for 22nd. His second-day 71 was one of only nine under par rounds in the entire 4A tournament. Junior Kellar Cudney and sophomore Cody Stoever finished tied for 49th. Both finished with 164 total. Cudney shot 79 and 85, and Stoever shot 77 and 87. Rounding out the competing Texans was junior Ethan Sharp who was 65th with a twoday total of 177 (86, 91).

The team’s state trip was the first for WHS since Texan teams qualified for the 2A state tourney in consecutive years in 1993 and 1994. The fourth place finish by the team is the school’s best-ever finish. The golf team is coached by Dane Saucier.
