It takes two for golf to top district
It is hard to win a district championship. It’s even harder to win two. But Wimberley took that to an entirely new level when they crowned two back-to-back district champion golfers last weekend.
Sophomore Jaxon Donaldson won the boys’ district championship by one stroke with a two-day score of 146 winning district individually for the second time in his twoyear high school career. Senior Hallie Adare won the girls’ district championship by eight strokes with a two-day score of 158. This was also her second district championship.
“They both played really well,” Golf Coach Dane Saucier said. “Those two kids put in a lot of time. They are out at the golf course every single day. It is nice when kids get rewarded for their hard work, and those two kids have put in the hard work. Back to back district championships is hard to do in any sport, and it is especially difficult in golf because the scores can fluctuate so much even just day to day.”
Cody Stoever shot his lowest round of the year for the Texans on the way to a 167 score. Gage Pruitt and Robby Richter, the two seniors on the team, shot 174 and Keller Cudney shot 176. Bryson Young also shot well as a medalist for Wimberley finishing with a 171. The boys’ team narrowly missed advancing to the Regional tournament even though they shot their lowest score of the season on the second day with a 320.
“The boys’ team played really well,” Saucier said. “If we were in any other district in the region, we’d probably be advancing as a team. We shot our two lowest scores as a team on the year. That is all you can ask for is to be playing your best at the district tournament.”
For the girls’ team, Peyton Smith finished with a two-day score of 184 followed by Madison Barbee with a 188 and Madelynne Rivera with a 210. All four of the Lady Texan golfers are seniors.
Donaldson will play in the Regional tournament on April 18 and 19. Adare will play on April 20 and 21. Regionals will be held at Colony Creek Golf Course in Victoria.
