Gobblers trip up Texan playoffs

The seventh all-time playoff meeting between the Wimberley Texans and the Cuero Gobblers was sure to bring the fireworks when they met up at the Alamodome.

Only this time, the Gobblers were able to make it past Thanksgiving.

A 31-yard touchdown pass with 5:30 left in the third quarter on third and 21 was enough for Cuero to get past Wimberley as the Gobblers won 36-26 to advance to the Regional Championship where they will face the Navarro Panthers.

For the Texans, their season will conclude with a 10-3 record.

The game was highlighted by the big play capabilities of both offenses as the two teams traded blow for blow.

In a highly competitive game featuring high level teams, mistakes can make the difference. Unfortunately for the Texans, they were on the wrong side of the coin.

“When you play a big time opponent like that your margin of error goes down,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said.

“It’s just today we had too many penalties and too many turnovers for us to beat a football team like that. But I’m proud of our kids, they went toe to toe with them (Cuero), had a chance there at the end but they made one more play than we did.”

Following a 50-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Ross to Nathan Simpson to make it the score 21-20, the Gobblers looked to respond.

However the Code Red Defense forced the fumble to give the ball back to the offense as the Texans looked to retake the lead.

However, the Gobblers were able to strip the ball and recover the ensuing fumble.

The turnover proved costly as Cuero running back Tycen Williams ran for a 64-yard run before being tackled at the goal line.

Despite holding the Gobblers to fourth down, Williams scored from the one yard line to give Cuero a 27-20 lead.

The Gobblers then turned it into a two possession game as Cuero quarterback Terry Rossett scored the two-point conversion to make it 29-20.

The Texans responded with a touchdown of their own as Cash McCollum found Juan Olmedo for a 27-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead down to 29-26 after a missed extra point.

Cuero once again was forced to answer the Texans’ touchdown in order to keep Wimberley at bay.

The Gobblers found themselves deep in Wimberley territory but the Code Red defense held them off as the Texans forced third and 21.

While the defense looked to have the stop, the Gobblers had other plans.

Rossett delivered a perfect 31-yard strike to wide receiver LeBron Johnson to make it 36-26.

Though the Texans tried to mount a comeback, the Gobblers picked off the pass to end the drive and the game.

“That’s part of the Texan spirit,” Warren said. “To hang in there and just fight. Never believe you are out of it and these kids never did. That’s why you play the game, and why you play to the bitter end. Just proud of our kids, and how fun they are to coach.”

Though this season might be over, expect the Texans to be back in the thick of the Regional Championship race and a State Championship race once again.
