Girls’ soccer in hunt for district championship

The Wimberley Texan girls’ soccer team is still trying to fight for a shot at the district championship sitting in second place just behind Boerne.

That meant last Tuesday’s game versus Boerne was a big one.

Wimberley, which is 17-4-1 on the season, started off hot with a goal in the first half but in the closing minutes, Boerne struck back. With about five minutes left in the first half, Boerne scored two goals to take a lead into halftime. Wimberley fought hard in the second half to make up the ground eventually settling for a 3-3 tie. Sydney Hendon, Emily Thames and Izzy Franchione scored in the game for Wimberley.

It was the effort of the Texans that really shown through to fight back from a deficit for the tie.

“Arianna Hernandez has been playing out of position at center midfield, and she really stood out in this game,” Head Coach Brinton Nute said. “She led by example. That was a huge game for us, and with her playing out of position, she ran really well.”

On Wednesday, Wimberley had a make up game after the previous week’s winter weather. They beat Davenport 2-1 with goals once again from Thames and Franchionie. The final game of the week was a 2-1 loss on Friday to Canyon Lake with Holly Harwood scoring the only Wimberley goal.

“The girls were tired after playing three games in a week,” Nute said. “With it being a rivalry game, we went down 2-0 after half, but the girls tried to fight back. They scored one and tried to tie it up at the end. It was encouraging the see the girls’ effort to try and get back in the game.”

Wimberley played Bandera on Friday before having Senior Night at home on Friday against Fredericksburg.
