Girls’ soccer fights for district lead

Soccer is on a HOT STREAK

Wimberley’ girls’ soccer team defeated Fredericksburg 2-0 last March 1 in district play to improve to 18-2-1 on the season and moved ever closer to advancing to the district 24A cross-district competition

In the Fredericksburg game, the Billies couldn’t break the Texan defense and seldom posed a threat until the very last minutes of the game. A very young and smaller team, Fredericksburg relied mostly on a “boot and run” attack while Wimberley used space and crisp passing to move up the field with precision.

The Texan first goal came off the foot of Anna Olmeda from a richocet off Cassidy Heineman’s pass inside the box. Wimberley’s second goal came from a corner kick by Avery Biggs and a scramble in the six-yard box for control before Holly Harwood scored the goal.

After the game, Fredericksburg coach Logan Minshew said that sometimes he had five ninth grade girls players on the field at times. During the season, his team has lost four upper class starters for the rest of the year.

So, Fredericksburg tried to wear down the Texans with mass substitutions of fresh players. But, while the Billies swarmed, they couldn’t match the coordinated play of the Texan girls.

Fredericksburg couldn’t break the vaunted Texan defense in the first half and seldom posed a threat in the second half. Each time they shot, Texan goalkeeper Casey Crawford scooped up the shots and cleared the ball up the field.

Coach Brinton Nute summed up the game as “It was another ‘grind it out’ result. This game was closer than it should have been considering our experience against theirs. Still, it’s another clean sheet and another district win.”

A powerful Boerne team came to Wimberley on March 5 after the Wimberley View’s time of press. Prior to that game, Boerne stood at 5-0 while Wimberley’s record was 4-1. A Texan win would give them the advantage of meeting the weaker fourth team during the up-coming cross-over stage of cross-district play.

This Friday, the Texans will play Canyon Lake at home in the last home game of the regular season then wrap up district play at Bandera on March 22 after Spring break.
