Girls’ soccer clings to slim district lead

Boerne is a notoriously strong soccer program, and it showed in the only game the Wimberley girls’ soccer team played last week.

“It is always tricky playing Boerne especially away from home,” Brinton Nute, Lady Texan soccer coach, said. “We have this mental block going to Boerne. Even though we are ahead in district and are still No. 1, it is still a tough place to go and the game showed that.”

Boerne jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Lady Texans in the first half before Ella Sandoval scored a goal, cleaning up a rebound from a 30-yard shot by Natalie Figueroa that hit the crossbar. The final score was 3-1.

It was just the second loss of the season for Wimberley and the first in district play. The Lady Texans are now 14-2-4 on the season and 6-1- 2 in district play. This gives them 20 points in the district standings with Davenport trailing with 19 points, Boerne with 18 and Canyon Lake with 17, which amounts to just one game back.

“If Canyon Lake wins, they could theoretically go to the top of the district from fourth place,” Nute said. “It is super tight with only three games left to go.”

The girls played Fredericksburg on Tuesday and will play Bandera on the road this Friday before spring break. The final game of the season will be at home versus Davenport on March 21 in a game that could decide the district championship.
