Girls’ soccer Bi-District champs

The Wimberley Texans girls’ soccer team totally outplayed smaller, less-talented Burnet last Friday in a District cross-over game and won 9-0. The win advanced the Texan girls to the play against Giddings on April 2 House Park in Austin. Similar to Wimberley’s outstanding record, the Giddings Buffaloes sport a fantastic season record of 21-3-2 with a district record of 11-0-1.

Just inside 90 seconds of the game against Burnet, Avery Biggers lifted a high drive into the box and the ball curved beautifully into the net for the Texans’ first goal. Then, under eight minutes into the game, Holly Harwood scored goal two by dribbling in and powering it past the keeper.

The Texan attack continued as Anna Olmeda dribbled in from the left side and sent a skidder that completely fooled the Panther keeper. At 29:32 in the first half, Avery Biggers attacked from the left and sent a slick pass to Anna Olmedo who scored goal four.

The pounding continued as Harwood again dribbled into the box and placed a power shot past the keeper to up the score to 5-0. A few minutes later, Biggers lifted a corner kick to the middle of the box where Harwood scored again just before the end of the first half. Wimberley 6 Burnet 0 at half.

Coach Nute substituted freely in the second half as the unusually warm evening began to wear on both teams. With 19 minutes to go in that second half, Jerzy Deathridge slipped a perfect through-ball to Anna Olmedo who tapped it in for the seventh goal. Four minutes later Sunny Jones dribbled into the box, spun and blasted the ball past the reaching keeper for goal eight.

For the final Texan goal, Anna Olmedo shot and the Burnet keeper touched it out but Arianna Hernandez shot it back in for the ninth Texan goal.

It was a great evening for our team,” Texan Coach Brinton Nute summed up the game. “We kept a clean sheet and hopefully we’ll build on the best of this game for Giddings.”
