Football beats Austin Achieve, focused on playoffs

The Wimberley Texans football team closed out the regular season with a victory as the Texans blew out the Austin Achieve Polar Bears 80-0.

The Texans finish the regular season at 7-3 and will head into the 4A DII playoffs as the second seed in District 14.

After a season filled with doubt on whether the 2020 season was going to be played due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the Texans battled through the adversity thrown at them and now look to return to AT&T Stadium.

“Very proud of them, (Wimberley),” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said after the game. “There was a time that all of us, I included, didn’t know if one are we going to play and two we are we able to play a full season.”

“So here we are,” Warren said. “We have been able to do that and that is a testament to these kiddos for doing the things we ask them to do, working and persevering. We had a ton of injuries with this team but the next guy steps up and keeps battling.”

When the Texans took a commanding 70-0 lead at halftime, it was the Wimberley Texans JV team who took over during the second half to close out the game.

With the rash amount of injuries that saw many of the Wimberley starters gone from the action, the possibility of these players playing during the Texans playoff run is highly possible.

“It was a great experience for these young men,” Warren said. “This game gave them a great experience and kept the other kids safe from injury… we may have to use some of these guys down the road, we did it last year and it wouldn’t surprise me if we did it again but that’s alright.”

“They are good young players, they know what we expect of them and they know what to do. If they get called, they will perform.”

As the Wimberley football team prepares for the playoffs, the road back to Arlington will be another tough stretch for the Texans.

The Texans will be favored to capture the Region IV title along with the Navarro Panthers after their close battle for the district crown in October. Wimberley’s side of the Region IV bracket features three possible contenders to the Texans Regional Crown in district champions Hondo and Sinton and district runner-up Giddings.

The Wimberley Texans will kick off the playoffs in a rare playoff road game against Smithville at 7:30 pm in Smithville on Nov. 13.
