Emotional game ends with Texan win

The Wimberley Texans produced their first shutout of the season with a 43-0 win over the Somerset Bulldogs.

It was an emotional night as the Somerset community was grieving over the losses of both long-time coach Marvin Allen and head football coach, and Texas football legend, Sonny Detmer.

Though the game setting was set under a somber atmosphere, both the Texans and Bulldogs were ready to play.

“First off you know your thoughts and prayers go out to this community and this program,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said after the game.

“Can’t imagine what they are going through, but at the same time for us (Wimberley) you have to continue to prepare, play the game, and try to be better. You don’t worry what’s going on the other side although that was on our minds. We knew what we had to do was come out here and play the game.”

The start of the game was a defensive slugfest as both defenses they gave their respective offenses fits during the first quarter.

Junior running back Moses Wray broke the slugfest late in the first quarter as he scampered for a 54-yard touchdown run to break the deadlock at 6-0 following a blocked extra point.

The defensive battle raged on towards the second quarter as neither team relented to give the opposing offense room to score.

Following a Wimberley punt that downed the Bulldogs on their five-yard line, the Code Red defense came up with a big play as Chris Schatte tackled the Somerset quarterback in the endzone for the safety to extend the lead at 8-0.

The momentum shifted in Wimberley’s way as Juan Olmedo returned the freekick on the ensuing kickoff 74 yards for the score to put the game at 15-0.

The Wimberley defense held off Somerset once again as the teams headed into halftime with the Texans holding a 15-0 lead.

After stopping Somerset on the opening drive of the third quarter, Wimberley struck again as Senior Quarterback Matthew Tippie found Colby Cotten on a 64-yard touchdown pass to go up 22-0.

Both Somerset and Wimberley traded possessions before Tippie found Ty Pruitt on a 73-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead at 29-0.

Shortly after the end of the third quarter, the Texans scored again as Senior Quarterback Cole Schroder scored on the QB draw to extend the lead at 36-0.

Olmedo’s scored with the final touchdown of the game running a 5-yard run to score to seal the game at 43-0.

Though the Texan offense woke up in the second half, Warren warned the team this cannot be a continuing habit.

“We told them (Wimberley) at half we can’t wait till the second half to start executing,” Warren said.

“We had opportunities in the first half, and that game should have been out of reach at halftime and it wasn’t… we have to be better, because if we don’t get better in a hurry we are not going to be as good as we want to be.”

On the flip side, the defense had another excellent performance with one turnover, three sacks, and a safety to complete the first shutout of the season. The Code Red defense has been a strong point for this season as the Texans have allowed an averaged at 22.6 points over five games.

“They just keep getting better and better,” Warren said. “They fly around to the football, they’re physical, they are not very big but they create some problems for other teams… The offense struggled especially in the first half but the defense had set the tone up to that point already and played lights out all night long.”

With their district game against San Antonio Young Men’s Leadership Academy canceled, the Texans will set their eyes on the Alice Coyotes this Thursday at Jourdanton. This will be Alice’s first game of the season due to the COVID 19 restrictions.
