Canyon Lake takes Game 1 in Battle of the Backbone

The Wimberley softball team battled Canyon Lake in the Battle of the Backbone series as both teams looked for a district win during Spring Break.

Unfortunately for the Texans, it was the Hawks who had Wimberley’s number.

Canyon Lake pounded the Texans with 13 runs while Wimberley only scored once as the Hawks left Wimberley with a smarting 13-1 loss.

“There’s been ups and downs this year,” Head Softball Coach Robert Klick said. “We’ve either killed somebody or been killed… It’s been a lot of ups and downs, and we’ve had to deal with a lot of things such as being without our starting shortstop and right fielder for different situations. So we have to be better at adjusting to certain situations or changes in the lineup. That’s something we really need to do a better job of doing. It’s just a lot of ups and downs, but it’s fixable that we can just press on.”

Canyon Lake was the first to get on the board during the bottom of the 2nd inning, as a bases loaded RBI single put the Hawks up 1-0.

A Texans error allowed another run to score for Canyon Lake before Wimberley walked in a run to have the Hawks up 3-0.

A hit batter with the bases loaded allowed one more run to score as Wimberley ended the inning trailing 4-0.

Juniper Daniel scored the first run of the game for Wimberley as her RBI single scored Jayden Jamesion to cut the lead down to 4-1.

However, Canyon Lake stretched the lead out as the Texans walked the batter twice with bases loaded for the Hawks to take a 6-1 lead.

A fielder’s choice by the Texans allowed Canyon Lake to score another run before Canyon Lake was able to walk in another run to take a 8-1 lead.

A two-run RBI single allowed the Hawks to extend the lead before Wimberley got out of the bottom of the third with Canyon Lake leading 10- 1.

The Hawks stretched the lead out to 13-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning before shutting out the Texans in the top of the fifth inning to runrule Wimberley as Canyon Lake brought home the win.

Wimberley returns home Tuesday to battle Bandera before traveling to Fredericksburg to battle the Billies on Friday.
