Canyon Lake comeback thwarts Wimberley victory

It was a rough week for the Wimberley softball team as the Texans went 0-2 last week with a 20-3 loss to the Boerne Greyhounds and a 4-3 loss to the Canyon Lake Hawks.

The losses drop Wimberley’s record to 7-9 overall and currently sit in third place with a 3-3 district record.

In their game against the rival Hawks, Canyon Lake was able to strike the first blow as a flyball scored one run as the Hawks took a 1-0 lead.

But the lead didn’t last long. An error made by the Canyon Lake defense allowed Addison Kirbo to score as the Texans tied the game up at 1-1.

Wimberley was able to take their first lead of the game as another Canyon Lake error allowed Peyton Smith to score as the Texans took a 2-1 lead.

After both teams went scoreless in the second inning, Canyon Lake tied the game up at 2-2 all when a Texan error allowed the Hawks to score.

With a scoreless 4th inning by both teams, the Texans took the lead back once again as Mackenzie Moore stole home on a passed ball to make it a 3-2 game.

But a Canyon Lake RBI single in the fifth inning once again tied the game back up at 3-3.

As the Texans failed to score in the sixth inning, Canyon Lake took advantage of another Texan error to score the final run of the game as the Hawks swooped in for the 4-3 victory.

Ashlyn Castro was in the circle for the Texans as she pitched a complete game and allowed just six hits, three walks, and allowed just two earned runs while striking out five batters.

The loss to Canyon Lake was compounded by the fact Wimberley had a rough outing against a tough Boerne team in the Texans’ 20-3 loss.

Greyhounds jumped on Wimberley early in the 1st inning as Boerne scored five runs to put the Texans in a hole.

After a scoreless second inning, Boerne continued to pour it on the Texan defense scoring nine more unanswered runs to take a commanding 14-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 4th.

The Texans broke through the tough Boerne pitching staff as Lynch’s groundout RBI single broke the scoreless streak.

Ryhan Masur’s groundball RBI single added another run to Wimberley’s scoring output before Lynch reached home plate on a Boerne throwing error to cut the lead down to 14-3.

Boerne added six more runs in the top of the fifth inning before closing out the Texans’ offense once again to receive the run rule victory at 20-3.

Wimberley will receive a much-needed break with a bye on Tuesday night before returning home to battle Bandera Friday night in an important district matchup that could determine playoff seeding.
