Boys soccer ties Fredericksburg

In the last seconds of the last minute of the game against Fredericksburg on February 12, Texan striker Brian Schmidt scored off a pass from Jack Cole and the Wimberley boys tied a good Fredericksburg team 1-1. “This was the third time this year that we’ve fought back to get a tie or a win,” Texans’ coach Ramez Antoun said after the thrilling game. “The thing about these Texans is that they play to win until the final whistle blows!”

This time that whistle blew just seconds after the Texans’ tying goal settled into the back of the Fredericksburg nets!

The Fredericksburg team moved and passed very sharply while playing a tight switching defense that kept the Wimberley boys in their own end of the field much of the game. But when the Billies put on maximum pressure, the Texans handled it and came back each time with their own attacks.

Wimberley got outstanding goalkeeping from Brenden Shott who limited the Billies to only one goal on many shots and a load of near misses. At least three times in the second half, Schott scrambled on the ground near the mouth of the goal to snatch the ball from the feet of an open Fredericksburg shooter.

After his hectic night in the nets, goalie Shott said, “This was my first game back from injury and it was great to be back on the field with the team. But, it was a tough game for us. I didn’t think they would be that strong. I think I did a good job of handling all of the balls coming at me in the air, but the low shots were the toughest. It was a difficult game but, overall, we played pretty strong as a team.”
