Boys’ soccer falls to Boerne

The defending state champion Boerne Greyhounds came to Wimberley this last week and beat the Texan soccer team 5-0.

“It was a much better result than the first time we played them,” Ramez Antoun, Texan soccer coach, said. “...It is hard to glean something positive in a 5-0 loss, but the kids played hard against the defending state champions. I’m really proud of the hustle, the grit and physicality of the game. There was no quit for 80 minutes even after the result seemed locked in.”

The loss dropped the boys record to 12-7-1 on the season and 4-4-1 in district play. They maintain their position in fourth place, which is the final place that would be playoff eligible. Wimberley sits behind Boerne, Fredericksburg and Davenport. With three games to play, each is important to keep the team’s playoff dreams alive.

Wimberley played Fredericksburg on Tuesday and will play Bandera at home on Friday for senior night. The game starts at 7 p.m. with senior night festivities beginning around 6:45 p.m. The last game of the district season will be on the road on March 21 against Davenport.

“This week is huge in our attempt to climb up the standings,” Antoun said. “Then that last game against Davenport… I’m having a hard time working the math where that game won’t decide something for us.”
