Bounce back win over Lampasas

After a tough 21-3 loss to Cuero last Friday night, the Wimberley Texans did what great teams do and bounced back with an impressive victory.

With 601 yards of offense, the Texans rolled over the Lampasas Badgers in a 45-21 win.

The Texans improve their record to 2-1 while Lampasas falls to 1-2.

What contributed to the victory was a refocused Texans group dealing with their first taste of adversity that spurred the spark the team needed as Head Football Coach Doug Warren explained.

“I don’t think you grow as a football team until you face adversity,” Warren said.

“I don’t know if losing the Cuero game was considered adversity but we felt like it was. We felt like we should’ve won that football game. It put us behind the eight ball and made us look at ourselves in the mirror saying, ‘Man, we have to be better and where do we need to be better?’ We challenged the kids all week that it had to start with you including all the coaches too. We found a way to be better this week, and that’s all you have to ask these kids to do is be better. I thought they really showed that tonight.”

After Lampasas scored on a 76-yard touchdown pass to take an early lead, Wimberley responded to the early deficit with a touchdown of their own as Cash McCollum connected with Dylan Kincaid on a 64- yard touchdown pass to tie the game back up a 7-7.

Following Juan Olmedo’s interception on the Badgers next drive, the Texans drove down the field all the way to the two yard line before Moses Wray punched it in for the score as Wimberley took a 14-7 lead.

Badgers running back Cade Brister tied the game up in the second quarter as he scored from 30 yards out to make it 14-14.

The next drive, the Texans offense drove the ball down the field and into the red zone before McCollum found Kincaid again on a one-yard touchdown pass to take back the lead at 21- 14.

After forcing the Badgers to punt, Texans added one more score before halftime as Jack Bruner kicked a 20- yard field goal to extend the lead at 24-14.

A last minute drive by Lampasas saw the Badgers get into Wimberley territory and attempt a field goal to cut the lead down to seven.

However, the kick sailed left, and the Texans held their 10 point lead going into the half.

Wimberley’s first possession in the first half ended in seven points as McCollum found Olmedo for a 43-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead at 31-14.

After trading possessions which included a fourth down stop by the Code Red defense, Lampasas was forced to punt the ball and downed it on the one yard line.

But it didn’t matter as McCollum hit Tru Couch on a 99-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead at 38-14.

A long Lampasas drive on the next possession ended in seven points for the Badgers as Brister scored his second touchdown of the game on a 15-yard run to make 38-21.

Following a Wimberley punt, Lampasas had one more shot at cutting into the Texans lead, but the Code Red defense once again made the big play as Nathan Simpson picked the ball off near the end zone to end the drive for the Badgers.

The Texans finally put an end to the Lampasas comeback as Moses Wray rumbled his way to a 50-yard touchdown run to make the final score 45-21.

It was an offensive fireworks show for the Texans as many of the players had career high stats.

McCollum finished the game completing 16-23 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns, which all are career highs in his varsity career.

But it wasn’t just the passing game that flourished as the Texans rushing attack ran for 214 yards with Wray leading the way with 82 yards rushing on 14 carries and two touchdowns.

Second in rushing was Jack Boyle with two carries for 54 yards while Nathan Simpson was third with his lone carry being a 37 yard run.

The wide receivers had a breakout game with Couch leading the way with two catches for 134 yards and one touchdown followed by Olmedo with six catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Simpson was third in receiving with four catches for 64 yards followed by Kincaid with two catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns.

The Code Red defense had a field day as the Texans held the Badgers team that was averaging 55.5 points per game to just 21 points and forcing two turnovers.

The Texans are on the road this week as they travel to Fredericksburg to take on the rival Battlin Billies.

The Billies are currently 3-0 with wins over San Antonio Sam Houston, Kerrville Tivy, and Gonzales.

Once again the Billies offense has been a high point this season with Fredericksburg averaging 47.3 points per game.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 at Battlin Billie Stadium.
