Basketball snaps losing streak

After a rough go at the Brownwood Holiday Classic, the Wimberley Lady Texan basketball team looked to bounce back from the holiday tournament and gain momentum heading towards district play.

The Lady Texans hosted Gonzales Tuesday night to battle Lady Apaches in their first game back from the Christmas Break.

Wimberley showed little rust from the holiday break and jumped off to a 14-11 lead in the first quarter capped by a Brooke Burcham three-point play.

Though the Lady Apaches battled back in the second quarter, the Lady Texans held firm and kept Gonzales from taking the lead at halftime.

Despite trailing by one point by the end of the fourth quarter, the Gonzales offense came alive in fourth scoring 20 points, including 11 points from the free throw line, during the period to secure the 56-48 win.

Burcham led the team in points with 10 while Carson Crowder and McKenna Ward each had nine points of their own including Ward’s two three pointers in the fourth quarter to keep the team alive.

Wimberley finished off the week with road trip to Flatonia to battle the Lady Bulldogs.

Despite being up 9-8 on the Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Texans showed out in the second quarter and didn’t allow Flatonia to score a single point during the period to extend their lead at 22-8.

The Lady Texan defense didn’t let up and allowed just 15 points in the second half to allow Wimberley to snap a five-game losing streak in their 43-23 victory.

Leading the way for Wimberley again was Carson Crowder with a team high 11 points while Ryhan Masor was second with 10 points and Emily Thames was third scoring with nine. McKenna Ward also contributed by leading the team in three pointers with two.

The Lady Texans finish up nondistrict play on Tuesday with a home game against the Comfort Deer before kicking off district play against the Llano Yellowjackets.
