Baseball sweeps Bandera in huge wins

After an emotional series against Canyon Lake, the Wimberley Texans baseball team needed to bounce back against the Bandera Bulldogs in order to stay in the playoff race in the competitive District 28.

Needless to say, the Texans cleared the obstacle with ease.

Wimberley swept Bandera in both district games, winning Game 1 25-0 and winning Game 2 12-1.

With the two wins, Wimberley is tied for second place with Canyon Lake at 3-1 while Boerne remains undefeated in district with a 4-0 record.

Davenport and Fredericksburg are tied for third place at 1-3 and Bandera remains at the bottom at 0-4.

In their Friday game on the road against Bandera, Wimberley started off with a leadoff single from Hagen Donley.

After advancing to second base following a Bandera error then stealing third base, Donley scored as Josh Prado hit a RBI single towards left field for the Texans to go up 1-0.

Lane Patek got on base with a single to put runners on 2nd and 1st base. Ethan Lancaster then brought the duo home with a two-run RBI single towards right to put the Texans up 3-0.

The Bulldogs ended the first inning but not before Wimberley added two more runs to make it a 5-0 game.

Following a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first, the Texans added another run to their lead as Patek hit Donley for a one-out RBI single to go up 6-0.

A triple by Lancaster scored Patek before Lancaster scored following a Kyler Lai RBI single as Wimberley extended the lead at 8-0.

Bandera put across their first run in the series with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the second inning as the Bulldogs cut the lead down to 8-1.

Wimberley added another run to the lead once again as Donley scored Chase Carson on a one out RBI double to put the Texans up again 9-1.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings as Bandera looked to avoid being run-ruled.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Texans loaded up the bases with no outs in the seventh inning.

A groundout put another score to Wimberley’s total before two more runs came across for the Texans as they went up 12-1.

Bandera’s comeback was short lived as Wimberley turned a double play to end the game and sweep the Bulldogs.

Leading the Texans in offense was Lancaster going 2-2 with three RBIs followed by Hagen Donley who went 4-5 with two RBIs.

In Game 1 of the series, Wimberley brought the hammer against the Bulldogs as they ran roughshod on route to a 25-0 victory,

Wimberley returns to district play Tuesday and Thursday against rival Fredericksburg.

The Texans will be looking for revenge against the Billies when they split the series last year which cost Wimberley a shot at the district championship.

Game 1 will be at Fredericksburg Tuesday then Game 2 will be played at Texan Ballpark Thursday night with both games starting at 7 p.m.
