Back to back post season shutout wins

Shutting out a playoff opponent is already hard, but to do it in back to back games is another level of difficulty all by itself.

For the Wimberley Code Red defense, it was another day in the park.

Behind four turnovers including a fumble recovery returned back for a touchdown, the Wimberley Texans blew out the Ingleside Mustangs 66-0 to capture the Area Championship.

The win marks the largest playoff victory in Texan playoff history beating the record of the Texans 56-0 win over Navasota last week.

This also marks the third shutout pitched by the Code Red Defense, who have allowed an average of 8.3 points through twelve games.

“I thought the defense played really well,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said. “They just kept turning it up a notch, and that was a good offense but they (Ingleside) couldn’t get anything going. Hats off to the defense for that.”

After quarterback Cash McCollum hit wide receiver Ryan Shaw for a 38-yard touchdown pass, the Code Red defense forced an Ingleside fumble, which was recovered by Kerrick Lai.

The next drive the Texans scored on a Tyler Ross three-yard touchdown run to extend the lead at 14-0.

The Code Red defense forced their second fumble of the game, which allowed Jack Bruner to kick a 30- yard field goal to extend the lead at 17-0.

With the two forced fumbles, Wimberley took full control of the game and never looked back behind the strong defensive effort.

“A big bunch of it is the experience on that side of the ball,” Warren said. “There is no substitute for that experience. They study a lot of film, know exactly what their opponent is going to do and they are an extension of the coaching staff when they get us in the right calls and checks. When you are playing at a high level like that, when those guys have played so many games, they are not having to think but just playing fast. That is what you are seeing.”

Running back Moses Wray kicked off the second quarter with a six-yard touchdown run to move the Texans ahead at 24-0.

Wray then added his second touchdown of the night when he ran for a 27-yard touchdown run to make it 31-0.

On their first possession of the third quarter, the Texans scored again as Mc-Collum found Tru Couch for a 31-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead at 38-0.

McCollum connected again on the next possession when he found Caden Heatly for the nine-yard touchdown pass to go ahead 45-0.

After the Code Red defense stuffed Ingleside on fourth down deep in Mustang territory, running back Jack Boyle ran for a 21-yard touchdown run to extend the lead at 52-0.

Cason Pitchard scored the record breaking touchdown on the next drive when he picked up a fumble and returned it 31 yards for the score to give the Texans the 59-0 lead.

Ross scored the final touchdown of the game on a one-yard scamper to make the final score 66-0.

Wimberley advances to the Regional Semifinals where the Texans will battle a familiar foe in the Cuero Gobblers.

This is a rematch from a Week 2 showdown between the Texans and Gobblers, which saw Cuero win 21-3 at Texan Stadium.

Kickoff is at 12 p.m. Friday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
