Zelia Kay Bowman

Zelia Kay Bowman passed away at St. David’s South Hospital in Austin, Texas on Sunday, June 9, 2019 with daughter Amy and husband John at her side. Kay was born on April 23, 1944 in Hearne, Texas.

She attended public schools there and worked in her parents’ flower shop. After school there it was off to Austin, Texas to work for lawyers while going to The University of Texas from which she graduated in 1968 with a degree in Education and later from Texas A & M and the University of Houston with advanced degrees . She moved to Europe to teach as part of the D. O. D. teaching program in England and Germany for several years and then returned to Texas when her father passed away. She then moved to the Houston area to begin her career in public school education in the Alief I. S. D. where she met another group of new teachers that would become her friends for the rest of her life. She was a teacher, counselor, and Assistant Principal in Alief before moving to Spring I. S. D.as a school administrator after she and John married in 1990 as they both continued their careers.

Kay was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1994 and after a while she and John retired early and moved to Wimberley, Texas in 2004 where she was active in the book club, garden club, and the Wimberley United Methodist Church which she and John joined in 2005.

Kay moved to Deer Creek of Wimberley, a nursing and care facility in 2016 until her fall there June 9, 2019 after which she was taken to St. David’s in Austin remaining there until her passing. Kay is survived by her husband John, daughter Amy and her husband Rob, and grand children Siara and Adelyn, relatives in Wimberley, Clute, Texas and Lake Jackson, Texas and many dear friends that Kay cherished and who helped make her life very special indeed.

Kay battled Parkinson’s Disease during much of her time in Wimberley with spirit, faith, and grace never letting that disease define her and most always facing each day with hope and great courage.

We give thanks for her life and we were blessed by her presence. Rest in peace gentle spirit. We will miss you all the rest of our days. Memorial service will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the Wimberley United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Wimberley area Parkinson’s Association and the Wimberley United Methodist Church.
