Paula McClanahan

Paula McClanahan, 70, passed away on August 17, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Paula was born on October 3, 1950, in Harlingen, Texas to parents Lawson and Zollie (Poynter) House. She grew up in Harlingen and attended Harlingen High. She worked for the employment commission office in Austin, Texas but had a deep interest in cosmetology and decided to pursue that dream. Paula opened Hair Magic in Wimberley, Texas where she and best friend Billie ran the company for over 25 years.

On July 5, 1969, Paula was united in marriage to James Ray McClanahan. Paula and Jamie met on a blind date for Homecoming set up by friends (which they both tried to get out of going on) in high school. It was the moment Jamie saw Paula open the front door that he knew he wanted to marry her. Only eight short months later, they tied the knot and were married for 52 glorious years. Paula and Jamie enjoyed spending time together traveling in their RV, raising their daughter Tamara, spending time at the beach and spending time with family.

Paula loved doing hair and the atmosphere the beauty shop offered. She could talk for hours and never met a stranger. She always made people feel comfortable and welcome. Paula was a shining light in the room and brought joy to everyone she met. Her laugh was contagious.

Paula’s greatest joy was becoming a mother and raising her daughter, Tamara. She was so proud of Tamara and watching her grow into a young woman. She was a wonderful mother who was always loving, patient and present. Her joy continued when she became a Mum (grandma) to Kenlee, Hayes and Leighton. She spent her every waking hour spending time with and loving on her grandbabies.

Paula is survived by her husband Jamie; daughter Tamara Cunningham and husband Thiess Cunningham; grandchildren Kenlee Cunningham, Hayes Cunningham and Leighton Cunningham; siblings Lawson House and wife Carolyn House and Dennis House and wife Karen House; along with many other cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.

Paula is preceded in death by L.W. and Zollie House and Elizabeth McClanahan.

In accordance with her wishes, Paula will be cremated. Her family is planning a service to celebrate her life on October 8th, 2021 at 2:00pm in Wimberley, Texas at the First Baptist Church.
