Michael Condit McCullough

Michael Condit McCullough, known as Mike by family and friends, passed away on April 28, 2021 after battling cancer. His wife, Becky, was at his side.

Mike was born the eldest of four children to Bernard and Judith McCullough on October 6, 1945 in Orange, New Jersey. He grew up in the idyllic community of Fayson Lakes, where he enjoyed swimming, sailing, ice skating, and community socials. His parents instilled family values in him. He grew up enjoying many visits with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. One of his favorite memories was visiting the seashore with his parents and siblings.

As a teen, he worked as a lake lifeguard and taught swim lessons to neighborhood children. He was a 1963 graduate of Butler High School, where he played football, baseball, and was a Junior Olympic Swimmer.

Mike left New Jersey after high school to attend Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio on a football scholarship. He was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He graduated from Marietta with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering in 1968 and began his career with Mobil Oil Company in Morgan City, Louisiana. Mike’s career took him to Israel before returning to Texas where he worked for various oil & gas firms. Mike retired from Mariner Energy in Houston where he was Vice President of Acquisitions/Divestments. Post retirement, he returned to work supporting Sequitur Resources. Mike was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

His wife Becky was the love of his life. Married at a beautiful historic castle in Scotland in 2000, they enjoyed 20 beautiful years of marriage. They successfully blended a life of four children, daughter Chelsea, son Michael II, son Daniel, and daughter Hannah, with love, patience, respect, and affection. With the untimely death of son Daniel, Mike was the rock for Becky and the family, providing strength and courage.

Mike’s joy in life were his children. He loved supporting their interests, even coaching son Michael’s childhood baseball teams in Spring, Texas. Mike was a dedicated follower of UT and SMU sports, the universities of his children. He was filled with pride at their diverse accomplishments. He admired and respected their hard work and ability to land on their feet. His children’s happiness was of ultimate importance to him, and he enjoyed a unique and loving relationship with each. The birth of his grandchildren, Bijou and Sol, brought out a vibrant happiness in Mike like no other.

Mike and Becky enjoyed an active retirement in Wimberley, Texas. Mike took a keen interest in community affairs, serving on the City Council, volunteering for community activities, and loyally supporting Wimberley High School sports. He was also a member of a Men’s Breakfast Club and a Couples Supper Club.

Mike loved travelling and adventure with Becky in Europe and around the US. He particularly loved their trips to France, Ireland, and Germany. Other special trips include scuba diving in Costa Rica and participating in Day of the Dead in San Miguel, Mexico. He also enjoyed travelling to visit siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins, including annual July 4ths in Tyler, Texas, Thanksgivings in Tennessee, and summer beach trips to Alabama and Florida.

A generous man, Mike was revered by his many friends. When asked, his friends described him as kind, loyal, caring, intellectual, observant, thoughtful, above reproach, a man’s man, and “one of the good guys.”

Mike is survived by his loving wife Becky; daughter Chelsea and husband Scott Collier, son Michael II and wife Tabitha and their children Bijou and Solaris and daughter Hannah Avery, all of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by sisters Molly Brown and Kathy Oliver of Crossville, Tennessee, brother and sister-in-law Keith and Susie McCullough of Tyler, Texas, sister and brother-in-law Kathy and Keith Perry of Wimberley, Texas, brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Claudine Covington of Greenville, South Carolina, a multitude of special nieces and nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mike will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Memorial services are planned for May 15th at 4pm at Vintage Oaks Farm in Driftwood, TX.
