    JOYCE MAILE

Joyce Maile

January 5, 1929- May 27, 2021

Patricia Joyce McDade, born on January 5, 1929 has recently passed away on May 27, 2021 at Alexia’s Pointe, in Wimberley, Texas.

Joyce was born to Emma and Ralph McDade in Nova Scotia, Canada. Her father, after losing his hardware store in Canada, moved his family to the United States to work on the barges in the shipyards of New York. Mom grew up a Catholic, in Staten Island, N.Y. with her older sister Gwen McDade. Mom loved to ride horses, swimming and while still in high school, she taught swimming to the younger students. Mom had a natural talent for teaching that shines throughout her lifetime as her own “Special Gift” to all.

After high school, she entered the “Miss Staten Island” beauty contest of 1949. She won the contest and they gave her a trip to Bermuda. My father, Casper Breuning Maile Jr., a quiet, bookworm type guy who saw her 1949 Miss Staten Island contest winning newspaper picture, wrote her a letter asking her out on a date. They soon fell in love and decided to marry. They married November 17,1951.

My parents finally decided to move to Long Island, N.Y. after my father started working as an accomplished Engineer for Sperry Rand in Queens, N.Y. After having three children, Casper B. Maile III, Theresa Elizabeth Maile, and Regina Louise Maile mom’s true colors shone, as a mother, wife and teacher.

Mom showed us her devoted love by sharing with us what she felt was most important like giving us chores, always saying thank you and community involvement like parades, boy scouts, girl scouts and 4H clubs. She herself excelled as a 4H teacher, teaching sewing, cooking, and gardening. Casper had a beautiful garden on the side of the house with cucumbers, tomatoes and Gladiolas. I learned sewing and I saved a favorite dress from those days for years, and even brought it with me to my college dorm days. Regina was taught swimming by mom and it wound up to be her favorite childhood sport like it was moms! We would frequently visit Long and Short beach in Smithtown on the weekends and I remember we could never get Regina out of the water. At the end of day at the beach, we all piled the beach chairs, towels, floats, shells, and coolers into the trunk of the Maroon Chrysler. Mom turned to Reggie and said, “Ok, Regina, where’s the keys?” Reggie said “ its in with the wunch mommy!” That meant inside the cooler, locked in the trunk.

In the 70’s, as if having 3 kids, teaching us life skills while participating in activities and cooking for us 5 wasnt enough, mom decided to pursue a college degree so she could prepare herself to work her calling. She got her college degree and started teaching 3rd and 4th grades in the 70’s, then furthered her education with a Masters Degree in Education in 1981.

Mom and Dad retired in Wimberley, Texas following their son and daughter’s move South. Their new home was 101 Round Up Drive, Wimberley, Texas. Mom continued spreading her love to the family with swimming lessons at the pool in Cedar Oak Mesa. She also served on the Cedar Oak Mesa Board taking minutes and even working her way up to President of committee. She taught the 4H clubs again including her granddaughter, Christy Maile. Later years mom worked at the Wimberley Thrift Store checking out customers and socializing with the public.

Mom, like her dad, always loved to talk and socialize. Nothing could beat her sense of humor and dry sarcasm. Mom always had to follow up anyone’s news with a funny remark and she made sure we were all laughing loudly. Her love to laugh and share her happiness with others will never be forgotten.

Special thanks to my brother Casper and sister-in-law, Belinda Maile for taking special care of mom and dad throughout their later years and especially during these trying times and declining health of both parents.

Joyce Maile has preceded in death by her husband Casper B. Maile Jr.

Her surviving family today lists as such: Casper B. Maile III and wife Belinda Maile of Wimberley, Texas.; Theresa Elizabeth Biase and husband Mike Biase of Rice, Virginia; Regina Louise Walsh and her husband Steve Walsh of Sayville, New York; grandchildren Christy Lynn, Colleen, and Brian.
