GEORGE SCOTT OWENS

George Scott Owens, son, brother, uncle and friend, died at home of natural causes - unexpectedly – on October 18, 2020. He was 63 years old.

Scott was born in Plainfield, NJ, on April 23, 1957, to John R and Nancy M Owens, both deceased. He is survived by his three Texas brothers and spouses - John P Owens of Sugar Land, Dave & wife Gwen Owens of Round Rock, and Pete & wife Donna Owens of Houston; nephews and nieces – Jeff Owens and Melissa (husband Damon) Benzaia; Eddie (wife Crystal) Owens, Donovan (wife Anna) Owens and Christopher (wife Rheanna) Owens; Marlowe and Mallory Taylor and Macy Owens; numerous cousins and grand nieces and nephews.

Scott grew up in Houston; he enlisted after high school in the US Navy where he served through the next several years. He is best known as the iconic Sno Cone Dude of Wimberley Shave Ice in Wimberley TX – the business he owned and operated for nearly 30 years. He spent each spring and summer freezing and shaving ice, then serving a myriad of colorful and flavorful sno cones from his Sno Cone stand, all around the Wimberley area – including annually at Texan Market Days. Scott always made a point to hire local high schoolers to help run his stand; one of his former employees owns the stand today. Late each fall he packed up and stored his stand for winter, before moving to Jamaica for four to six months, where he relished the good life - the beaches, the food, his favorite music, and his good friends - on that island. He was happy in his retirement.

Scott was local color everywhere he went, and a great friend to everyone who knew him. His brothers and our families are richer for having Scott in our lives, and we will miss him greatly. And we are sure if you knew him, you’ll miss him, too. Scott will be cremated, and his ashes will be scattered by his family at a later date.

An informal celebration of Scott – the Sno Cone Dude - will take place at Wimberley Shave Ice, 101 Rhoades Ln, Wimberley, on Sunday, November 1. All are welcome to stop by anytime between 2-5 pm.
