Don L. Carr

Don L. Carr, 76, died unexpectedly April 21, 2019 at his home in Driftwood, Texas. He was born May 18, 1942 in Mathis, Texas, the son of Clyde Graves Carr, Sr. and Katherine Speedy Carr.

Donnie graduated from Crystal City High School, Class of 1960, found and married the love of his life Sandra Brennan in 1961, and the two started their adventurous journey. In 1967, he graduated from the University of Texas with a B.A. in Business.

During his time at UT in addition to his studies, Donnie held jobs reproducing maps for the Texas Highway Department and bartending at the Villa Capri. After graduation from UT, Donnie and Sandy spent a brief time in San Antonio where he worked for an import/export company. That job led them to Coatzacoalcos, Mexico where Don managed a fish processing plant. They returned to Texas where Don made his mark in the communities where he lived. In Eagle Pass he founded and managed the Big River Catfish Farm and served a term as president of the Catfish Farmers of America. In 1977 they built their family home in Driftwood. Don founded Carr Bros. Ranch Realty and the Early Texas Building Company; the Hill Country is now dotted with Don’s Early Texas Homes. Don loved Wimberley and was very involved in the community. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, a board member of the Wimberley Water Supply Corporation and a volunteer firefighter.

In the 1990s after several visits to Terlingua, Don fell under the spell of the Big Bend region and bought property there. He loved spending time in the desert and formed many special friendships within that community. At his passing, Don was building a cabin with a spectacular view of the Chisos Mountains. It was in Terlingua that he worked on his first of more than a dozen films around the state. Don enjoyed his time in the film industry and the friends he made there. He was a member of IATSE, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Local 484.

Family and friends always came first in his life. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, C.G. Carr, Jr. and Nick D. Carr. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, his son Michael Brennan Carr and wife Leslie, of Bellingham, MA, his daughter, Cathy Lynne Carr of Los Angeles, CA; three grandchildren, Alexander, Ethan, and Ella Carr; one sister, Mary Kay Carr; many nieces and nephews, and countless friends whose lives were touched by his generosity and compassion.

Don L. Carr was a free spirited, creative, and unique individual. To have known Don was to have known a heart as big as the sky, eyes that twinkled brighter than all the stars and a smile as warm as the sun. He will be missed by all who knew him.
