BARBARA J. GRANT

March 13, 1940 – July 19, 2021

Beloved, long-time Wimberley resident, Barbara Jean Grant passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021, at her home. She was born on March 13, 1940, to Clifford Leslie and Ann Dolores (Baron) Wagner, in Joliet, Illinois.

She is survived by son Marcus Gitterle; daughter-in-law Heather Carter; grandsons Aidan and Gabel; sister Madeleine (Lynn) Fallin; nieces Kimmy Fallin-Doyle (David) and Susan Farver (Michael) of Florida; nephew Dave Fallin of Illinois; and by family friends Steven Greenberg (Kristin), Ebby Ajiwe (Helen), and Kurt McGhee (Kristi), each of whom thought of her as a surrogate mom. She is pre-deceased by her husband Paul Sandman and her brother Kenneth Leslie Wagner.

Danny, her first born child, died of complications related to hernia surgery, at the age of 2. In 1962, she gave birth to her son Marcus.

During the 1970s, she enjoyed a successful career in the hotel and catering business, at McCormick Hotel and the Ritz Carleton in Chicago. In 1977, she became the manager of a state fish hatchery in California. In 1979, she moved to Wimberley with her son Marcus, husband Jim Grant, and stepdaughter Susan, where she made many friends, and enjoyed a diversity of projects, jobs, and adventures.

In 1981, Barbara became an Emergency Medical Technician with Wimberley EMS. In recent years, she served as Assistant City Manager for the City of Woodcreek. She became a Hays County Master Naturalist in 2018.

She traveled to the British Isles several times, and in 2020 went on an extended medical mission trip to Nigeria, made possible by Ebby and Helen Ajiwe, her adopted African family.

Her memory will be a blessing to countless individuals. She will be missed dearly.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Wimberley. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Blue Hole. Arrangements are under the direction of Thomason Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at thomasonfuneralhome.com.
