Wimberley basketball seasons end during chaotic week

It was another chaotic week for the Wimberley Texans basketball team that ended in disappointment as the team fell to the Cuero Gobblers 68-63 in the Bi-District round of the 4A playoffs.

After being tied for second place with rival Fredericksburg in the district standings, the tiebreaker that was supposed to be played to determine the playoff seeding was ultimately canceled after the recent winter storms wreaked chaos across the state.

Unable to play a game, the two teams ended up flipping a coin for district positioning, which ended in Wimberley securing second place in district.

With their game set with Cuero for Saturday, Wimberley was thrown another curveball as the game site was changed from Seguin to Northside Sports Gym in San Antonio.

But after all the chaos was settled, the Texans were set to play.

Wimberley jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before Cuero came back to cut the lead down to 5-4.

Wimberley extended their lead 10-4 once again before Cuero surged back to make it a 12-10 game.

The Texans then went on a 12-0 scoring run that extended into the second quarter as Wimberley took a commanding 25-10 lead.

Wimberley once again made another deep scoring run as the Texans extended the lead to 37-18.

Cuero closed out the second quarter on a 5-0 run as Wimberley took the lead into halftime at 37–23.

The scoring run continued for Cuero as they extended the run to 9-0 to make it a 37-27 game.

However the Texans kept the Gobblers at bay heading into the fourth quarter with Wimberley up 50-42.

Cuero kicked off the fourth quarter with a 7-2 scoring run to trim the lead down to 52-49.

The Texans extended the lead up to 54-49 but the Gobblers soon tied it up after a three-point shot at 54-54.

With Wimberley clinging to a 55-54 lead, Cuero then went on a 7-0 scoring run to take a 61-55 lead.

However the Texans refused to give in and stormed back to make the game 65- 63.

But free throws made by Cuero sealed the Texans fate as the Gobblers took the 68-63 win.

Leading the team in scoring was sophomore Miles Scheleder with 21 points followed by senior Jaxon Watts with 15 points. Senior Ethan Scheleder was third in scoring with 14 points.

The loss will conclude Wimberley’s season with an overall 15-12.
