Wimberley ISD expands school closure to April 14

Wimberley ISD has extended the school closure deadline to April 14 to stay in line with Hays County’s “Stay at Home, Work Safe” order. The previous closure had announced school would be closed through April 3.

“The ‘Stay at Home’ order from the County Judge lasts until April 10,” Wimberley ISD Superintendent Dwain York said. “We already had a break scheduled on that day around Good Friday, so our next day to be open would be April 14. But, we are still assessing the situation as it develops.”

York said that the regulations involving social distancing are changing fast enough that the date for when school would restart is still fluid.

“We are waiting until we get permission to be open,” York said. “But the important thing is that we will continue to serve meals and provide instruction throughout the school calendar year.”

WISD has begun providing meals to children who were on Free or Reduced Lunch within the district. The school is now reminding parents that applications for Free and Reduced Lunch can be submitted at any time.

“It has come to my attention that due to a variety of circumstances related to the pandemic, some of our families’ financial situations have changed and would now likely qualify for free and reduced price meals at Wimberley ISD,” Wimberley ISD Superintendent Dwain York said in an email to parents. “Families can apply anytime within the year for this program.”

To begin the application process to receive free and reduced price meals at WISD go online to: https://www.mealappnow.com/manwim/splash.php

The online application is a quicker option, but for those who need to use the printed applications, you can return it to the district at 951 FM 2325, Wimberley, TX 78676.

Graduation plans for the Class of 2020 are changing also, but the situation has not yet been resolved.

“One of our priorities through the delays and closures of this situation has been to ensure that our Class of 2020 seniors are properly honored and congratulated,” York said. “Several weeks ago we were informed that Strahan Coliseum has cancelled all of their graduation events, so we began to discuss other options.”

York said that several different options are being considered at this time and that the district hopes to have a plan finalized by the beginning of May.
