Miguel and Gaylan rock with stories

Wimberley is an eclectic and diverse town. KWVH has a lot of different shows that appeal to certain individuals and groups, ranging from bluegrass, classical, Texas, Americana, Kids View, with a sprinkling of public affairs shows. The talent of each unique individual - the producers and radio hosts is phenomenal.

Listening to the shows throughout the day, a lot of stories and local interviews mean a lot of time in the car listening to the different shows. Stumble across the Funk Sway program sometime. It is refreshing and a very interesting show with deejays that can entertain for days.

Mike Pankratz and Gaylan Latimer along with their Producer Yvonne Thompson (who keeps the two in line) host the show. Listening to their stories, these guys really know how to share some musical history in their own unique way.

Yvonne loved listening to their stories. “At parties, those two guys had the best stories,” and the show was born. Both are musicians, veterans of many different styles over the years.

Gaylan Latimer got his start with the legendary producer Huey P. Meaux in Houston. Signed by the infamous Meaux when he was 15, Gaylan was on MGM records and toured with the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars. Also, at the same time, he was touring and recording with Bobby Sharp as Bob and Gaylan on Epic records. He performed with various acts such as Del Shannon, Jimmy Reed, The Zombies, Herman’s Hermits, Sir Douglas Quintet, and many other rock groups of that era. Later in the 70’s Gaylan originated the band called Heather Black, that released two albums and performed in concerts with Tina Turner, Flora Purin, The Destroyers, Buddy Miles, and many others, while also writing songs covered by Freddy Fender and other artists. Miguel Pankratz’s parents were dancers, and he grew up with “Hank, Lefty Frazzell, 40s and 50s Honkey Tonk.” He’d watch drummers, thinking, “I can do it better than him.”

“The Beatles hit and in high school everyone was in bands… Later played many black clubs in Houston, also was there when the Thirteenth Floor Elevators debuted psychedelic rock, but then… I was drafted at the height of the Austin music scene,” for two years. After his service, it took a while to get back into music. Miguel has played with Stop the Truck, Freddy Powers who was a writer of about forty of Merle Haggard songs, and is currently playing with Austin’s official reggae band, the Mau Mau Chaplains, still performing every week in Austin.

The Funk Sway Show features one guest each week who brings along 7 to 9 songs that reflects who they are, milestones in their life, any type of music by any type of musician.

“Funk Sway, I feel fortunate to be a part of it,” Yvonne said. “It’s a reflection hour for us as we want to reflect this wonderful, unique town,” Gaylan said. “We’re here cause we’re not all there,” added Miguel. “It’s great to see Wimberley come out of the woodwork with all of it’s diverse, and talented people. Our gratitude goes out to KWVH for giving us this chance to share a little musical history along with some laughs and music. That’s what it is all about---the music.”

The show has been on the air since September. Want to be on? Drop an email to
