Texans pull out last minute victory

The Wimberley Texans football team pulled off a last-minute victory last Friday night in Bandera as they scored in the overtime to win 41-38. This Friday, they host a powerful Navarro team without Cooper McCollum, their stellar quarterback, who suffered a broken collarbone against Bandera.

“Navarro is always a good team and one of our biggest rivalry games,” Texan head coach Doug Warren commented. “They run out of the slot-T formation and they’re wellcoached. We’re both 2-0 in the district so we’re both still in the district championship scramble. We’ve got a bunch of bumps and bruises, so we’ll evaluate how many are ready to play on Friday.”

In the game against Bandera, the game stood at 35-35 after regulation time. The Bulldogs chose to take the ball first and moved down the field until Wimberley’s defense stood tall to force a fourthdown field goal. Score Bandera 38-Wimberley 35. After the kickoff, and without their starting quarterback, Wimberley began a sustained drive of four and five yards a down by Moses Wray (9), Guy Kypuros (12) and Coby Boyle (11).

The game was played in sloppy conditions on a wet, muddy grass field after many days of rain. According to Coach Warren, the rain and the muddy field didn’t didn’t seem to affect either team except to limit both passing games. Still, Caleb Cervenka hauled in seven passes for 92 yards and one touchdown.

The winning touchdown came on another run to the left side that split the defensive line just enough for Guy Kypuros to squeeze through and score. Wimberley 41-Bandera 38! That Wimberley didn’t convert the extra point mattered little as the Texan defense stiffened after the kickoff and stopped the Bulldogs as time ran out.

“We had to bump some people around to get the combinations on the field that we needed,” Coach Warren said. “But, the offensive line really came through for us. Colby Boyle stepping up for us at quarterback was also really special. Moses Wray carrying the ball for 69 yardswas a real pick up as was Josh Limely intercepting that pass at just the right time to keep us in the game.”

“It was an exciting game with a lot of penalties on a wet field. If we had lost, we would have been mostly out of winning the district. But, we won!”
