Woodcreek hosting Arbor Day, National Night Out celebrations

The face of Woodcreek has changed considerably since the 696 acres were incorporated in 1984. Climate change, drought and more recently, the threat of fire have all challenged citizens and community leaders in protecting our community resources. Sadly, many of the beautiful oak trees that lined the city streets and neighborhoods died, ravaged by oak wilt disease. The city needs new ideas, methods and community involvement to conserve the natural health.

Inspired by the beauty and natural spirit of the local environment and citizens, the Woodcreek City Council has pursued an initiative with a designation to conserve and care for trees and to educate the community on the care of trees. It’s called “Tree City USA.”

This effort includes a comprehensive tree ordinance that serves to provide quality of life and health for the citizens of Woodcreek by protecting precious tree resources. Trees have a positive effect on health, environment and community appearance, while maintaining property values. Also, a Tree Board was recently formed to support the vision of the Woodcreek City Council in its efforts to conserve trees. One task involved taking a survey of the trees in public spaces. The Tree Board’s grand mission is to identify and determine the health and needs of the community heritage trees.

With a tree ordinance, board and a firm commitment to protect and care for the heritage trees of Woodcreek, there is only one important criterion left to qualify the city for the community designation of Tree City USA. It’s time to celebrate with the city’s very own Woodcreek Arbor Day on October 4. The Tree Board, along with help from the Woodcreek City Council, has planned an exciting and educational event for the community.

The Woodcreek Arbor Day activities will begin at 3 p.m. and last until 5 p.m. followed by National Night Out 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Arbor Day activities will include a tree planting demonstration, tables to browse with information about local ecological services and resources, as well as tree and plant educational materials. There will be many fun and educational activities for the children including a petting zoo from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., playscape, color pages tables and access to a cool swimming pool with a lifeguard provided by the Camp Young Judea.

Jacob McElroy, a certified arborist with Simple Leaf Tree Company, will donate a 65 gallon tree to Camp Young Judea in gratitude and demonstrate how to plant it.

To further the excitement of the day, a lucky person will receive a door prize of a specially donated tree. And, an auspicious Tree Board member is making giveaway sugar cookies. Food will be generously provided by Camp Young Judea.

With the generosity of Camp Young Judea, which was one of the original entities present at the time of the Woodcreek incorporation, both celebrations will occur at the camp location on 121 Camp Young Judea Drive on Woodcreek on Oct 4, 2022.

Come, celebrate and recognize the community efforts to protect the city, trees and skies.
