WISD gets an ‘A’ rating from state

Wimberley Independent District just earned an “A” from the state on the annual report card.

As Wimberley ISD students headed back to school, the Texas Education Agency was handing out grades to school districts on the 2017-18 school year. According to the TEA, this report card is designed to tell districts how well they are helping students reach grade level and also how well they are preparing them for success after high school. Much like the grades schools give students, districts can use these grades to identify ways to help schools improve over time. The overall grade is based on performance in three different areas—student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps.

“We are excited to be recognized as an A district. While this is great affirmation, we recognize that education is ever-changing and multi-dimensional—we have to stay on our toes and be ready to adapt and improve our ways of teaching Wimberley ISD students,” said Dee Howard, Wimberley ISD Assistant Superintendent. “During this first week of school, we applaud the hard work of our teachers and students and have already buckled down for a new year focused on achieving milestones and getting better,” she added.

Parents are encouraged to visit TXschools.org to view online reports cards designed to be useful tools to see how a school or district is doing in different areas.

Wimberley High School teachers and administrators welcome back students. The TEA report also scored Jacob’s Well Elementary School, Danforth Junior High School and Wimberley High School as “Met Standard” in the 2017-18 school year. Scudder Primary School is paired with Jacob’s Well under this rating system. The ratings include Met Standards, Met Alternative Standards and Improvement Required.

“Achieving an A rating reflects the hard work and commitment of everyone within a school district, starting with our classroom teachers. We should all celebrate the outstanding work of these dedicated educators,” said Mike Morath, TEA Commissioner of Education. “Districts with high levels of poverty who attain this high level of performance are proof positive that poverty is not destiny. With strong instruction and curriculum, all students can succeed.”

There were only 153 school districts in the state of Texas, out of 1,100, that received an “A” rating from the TEA.

“This is great news for Wimberley ISD as we start the new school year. Thank you to our classroom teachers and students for working hard to earn this recognition. And now, with this A rating, we are motivated to make this year even better than the last one,” said Dwain York, Wimberley ISD Superintendent of Schools. “Congratulations to our teachers, students, staff and administrators for excellent work,” he added.
