Wimberley VFW to honor Memorial Day

A formal Memorial Day observance will take place at the Veterans Memorial Plaza beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 31st. The Plaza is located on top of the hill at the grounds of EmilyAnn Theater on FM 2325.

Memorial Day was created as an occasion to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our freedom. It is our opportunity to stop and give thanks for the many who have died protecting that freedom.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. It is now celebrated on the last Monday in May.

At the conclusion of the observance, the flags will then be lowered to half staff, accompanied by the playing of Taps. In keeping with custom throughout the United States, flags at the Plaza will be raised to full staff at noon.
