Wimberley Valley Big Band sizzles, swings into summertime with a free concert

The weather is hot, but the music will be even hotter when the Wimberley Valley Big Band presents their family-friendly, free concert on Saturday, June 18 in the chill of the VFW Hall in Wimberley. From 3 p.m. – 5 p.m., the group of twenty or so volunteer musicians will play an array of popular big band selections. Director, Doug Gillory, said, “This concert will be an opportunity for us to play some jazz and swing with a little rock with multiple soloists to showcase the improvisational skills of our super-talented members.”

With a brief intermission, the two-hour long event will feature many toe-tapping and Dance-inducing tunes including George Gershwin’s Broadway hit, “Summertime” and Herbie Hancock’s sixty-year old standard, “Watermelon Man”. “Makin’ Whoopee” has been largely covered by notable performers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Also, the band’s lively playlist includes a jazzy interpretation of a Lennon/McCartney classic, “Norwegian Wood”.

VFW Post 6441 is located at 401 Jacobs Well Road in Wimberley. The VFW Auxiliary will sell food and drink concessions, but “BYOB” is another refreshment option.
