Wimberley Pride March draws hundreds in support

An estimated six hundred Wimberley residents turned out to show their support of the LGBTQ community on the U.N.’s International Day of Peace September 21.

The crowd grew larger and larger at the Brookshire Brother’s parking lot; with the Pride flags flying and colorful characters everywhere. The mood was one of exuberance, and as the 7 p.m. hour grew closer, the excitement also grew. A few mentioned what an historical event it was.

A Pride March in Wimberley where Moms and dads, singles, couples, teens, children, grandparents, of every size and every color could show their support for the LGBTQ community.

“We were thrilled that Wimberley would have something like this. It’s heartwarming. Hope for the world is what it is about,” Kit Holmes of the Unity Church. “We were one of the first of 25 sponsors of the march.”

When the 7 p.m. hour was reached, law enforcement blocked off roads, and the parade began with spectators lining both sides of Ranch Road 12 shouting encouragement.

Each of the groups walked the route leisurely, but in marching order from Brookshire’s to the Wimberley Square.

“I’m excited and happy to be a part of it. Love is love,” said Carolyn Galle.

There were even horses in the march to add to the festive air, with plenty of painted faces, costumes and smiles everywhere.

“I’m here because I want to keep Wimberley an inclusive and kind community. And the LGBTQ community is a part of Wimberley,” Diane Hershey said.

It was a typical parade in Wimberley, with spirit, smiles, plenty of photo opportunities, waving flags, and people expressing themselves, their happiness, peace, love and acceptance.
