    MARK BURSIEL

Wimberley ISD Board of Trustees

Mark Bursiel

WV: What do you want to accomplish if elected?

Bursiel: WISD is good compared to similarly situated schools. This is evidenced by our “A” rating, recent bond that overwhelmingly passed and by closing gaps between our highest performing kids and our kids who have historically struggled. I will continue supporting our students and teachers with enriching programs that help balance out the stresses of STAAR and other state mandates. I will continue strong fiscal practices and accountability that has led to community support. Fostering safe environments for our kids through programs that counteract bullying and help kids who are struggling with depression, anxiety and mental illness is a must.

WV: What are the biggest changes you think WISD will face in the coming years and how would you address them?

Bursiel: Without a question the main priority facing our district is school/student safety. With the release of the IWatchTexas App, allowing for anonymous reporting of suspicious activity, I look for WISD to push and advocate that every teacher, student and parent download this app. This app can also be used in the fight against bullying. There are many activities that are averted due to student awareness. Second, I would like to see additional security cameras added to each campus so that all activities can be monitored. Our children and staff safety should always be our top priority!

WV: Throughout the design, bidding and construction of the new elementary school, what are your priorities and plans for oversight?

Bursiel: Construction projects of this magnitude the priority will be to keep the project on time and under budget. I am pleased that WISD made the decision to hire a construction management firm to act as an owner’s representative throughout these projects. Having this team will reduce strain on our administrative staff in overseeing the operations of the projects and allow them to focus on the continued success of our students and teachers. All the bond projects have been developed through the collaboration of the board, staff and the community and I think it will be important to continue such collaboration.

WV: What are areas of education that you would like to see implemented or emphasized within the school district for our students?

Bursiel: At the board level, it is important for us to take direction from our teachers and administrative staff on the implementation of new educational programs and curriculum to serve our students. This is a collaborative process that involves vertical alignment between various grade levels and campuses, analysis of state testing scores and internal benchmark exams and feedback from teachers, parents and the community. The board’s role is to provide support and oversite in these areas as recommendations are made for curriculum changes and new innovative educational programs are advocated by our administrative team.

WV: How do you plan to support Wimberley’s teachers and WISD staff?

Bursiel: I will work to provide the tools they need from a budgetary and policy standpoint to be successful teachers and administrators. Looking at options to increase the budgets in key areas, such as art, music, and PE, is a must. These are critical areas for our children’s enrichment and it should not be overlooked. Being open minded to receiving feedback and direction on staff and student needs so collaborative solutions can be reached is crucial. I am interested in allowing only agendas that are in the best interest of All the staff, ALL the students and the whole community.
