WHS grads headed to serve

Graduating high school is a big step in anyone’s life. It is one of those big crossroads where a choice is made that will affect a person’s lifetime. This might be the first time a major decision has to be made with no turning back. Some chose college as their path in life, others a trade, but those willing to serve their country is one of the highest callings that a young man or woman can choose. This year, six Wimberley High School Graduates have decided to take the path of serving the country.

Diana Alvarado is entering the U.S. Navy

Since October 13, 1775, the United States Navy has been guarding the shores of America. Today there are 329,867 active duty personnel with 100,495 ready reserve personnel, making it the largest navy in the world. It has 480 total ships and 2,623 manned aircraft ready at all times.

Demitrius Hendry is entering the U.S. Air Force

On Aug. 1, 1907, the U.S. Army Signal Corps established a small Aeronautical Division to take “charge of all matters pertaining to military ballooning, air machines and all kindred subjects.” On September 18, 1947, President Truman officially named the U.S. Air Force and made it a separate branch of the military, away from the Army.

Joshua Herrera is entering the U.S. Marine Corps

The Marine Corps has been in service since November 10, 1775, when the Continental Congress ordered that two battalions of Marines be raised for service as landing forces with the fleet. Marines have executed more than 300 landings on foreign shores and served in every major U.S. naval action since 1775.

Jack Cole, Michael Jones, and Shayne Ybarra are entering the U.S. Army

On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress formed the Continental Army for all 13 American colonies to fight the Revolution. George Washington was unanimously elected Commander-In-Chief of the fledgling Army, and he would lead the colonies to victory and independence.
