VFW Auxiliary offers scholarship opportunities for young artists

The Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary’s annual Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest gives high school-age artists the opportunity to earn scholarship money through their art.

Each year, more than 4,000 high school students from across the country participate in the contest. The contest began in 1979 to give young artists a platform and venue for expressing patriotism not only through their words, but also their art.

The contest judging begins with Wimberley’s VFW Post 6441 Auxiliary. Entries submitted by any student who is enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home-study program. The winning entry in the local competition is submitted to the district and state levels. State winners are forwarded to na tional level where $31,000 in scholarships await the top finishers.

Local and district top-finishers also receive scholarships. In Wimberley, the top three entrants receive $150, $100 and $50.

Entries may be two- or three-dimensional. The deadline for submission to the local VFW Auxiliary is March 31. For information and entry forms, contact Merry Merian, 361-920-0426.
