Lions Club funds 36 organizations

The Wimberley Lions Club donated a record- breaking $90,000 to 36 local nonprofits and organizations as part of their annual giving from funds raised by running Market Days.

“Our motto is ‘We serve,’” Wimberley Lions Club President Amy Cartee- Cox said. “The whole Lions’ purpose is to serve the community. Anything we can do to further community efforts, we will do, and Market Days has been our only fundraiser to do that.”

The donations fulfilled requests, sometimes even at amounts greater than what the organization asked for, in categories involving youth activities and community service. From Wimberley High School Band Boosters to Katherine Anne Porter School to the Crisis Bread Basket and Wimberley EMS, organizations across Wimberley were happy to accept the requested funds.

“It is actually very fulfilling,” Cartee-Cox said. “We send out letters to them and ask them how much they need. We got back 36 requests and actually granted all of them… The grants process is a way for us to give money to these groups that help the community like Habitat for Humanity. We are able to help them buy materials. It is all community based stuff. Freedom Canine is one of the new groups. They involve the high school kids to raise puppies to be service dogs… It’s the Wimberley Players and Starlight Symphony Orchestra… It is all about serving the community with good causes to help better the community.”

The Lions Club’s November meeting will be held on Nov. 15 at the Wimberley Community Center at 6 p.m. and the Wimberley Community Chorus is scheduled to perform. The public is invited to attend.
