Soccer clings to chance at district championship

This deep into the season, the only thing any team can ask for is a chance to control their own destiny. With just two games left on the district schedule, the Wimberley Texan Girls’ Soccer team sits in second place, but two more wins would result in a district championship. The last game of the season against first place Boerne looms large.

“But we are just taking it one game at a time,” Head Coach Brinton Nute said in tone of a seasoned coach.

Wimberley is 20-4-1 on the season with a 6-1-1 record in district play after two wins last week and a victory on Monday morning.

Last week started off with a trip to Bandera. Led by Holly Harwood, who got the hat trick, Wimberley won 5-1. Besides Harwood’s three goals, Emily Thames had two. The Texans had put the game away by halftime with a 4-0 lead.

The victory was also sweetened by the reemergence of Sunny Jones.

“She has been out for nearly the whole season with an injury,” Nute said. “She came back in tough conditions and played 20 minutes. She looked like she never left.”

Due to the pandemic and last month’s blast of cold weather, multiple games have been rescheduled. On Friday, Wimberley played against Fredericksburg, who they will also play on Wednesday of this week.

The Texans beat the Billies 1-0 at home on a goal about 10 minutes to the second half.

“It was a cross by Selah Jones on a corner kick,” Nute said. “The ball landed in the box, and it seemed to take forever. Elise Brown knocked it in from about four yards out.”

On Monday, Wimberley beat Davenport to keep the chances of a district championship alive. On March 10, Wimberley will play Fredericksburg on the road at 5:15 p.m. The game will be followed up with a match between the Boys’ varsity teams. If the Texans win, it will come down to a 6 p.m. match on Monday, March 15 on the road in Boerne to determine the district championship.
