Sales show strong local economy

A strong report from sales tax allocations show that Wimberley had a good start to the summer.

The city of Wimberley receives one percent of all sales within the city limits as a portion of the 8.25 percent sales tax collected by the state. The June report, which represents sales made in May, was up 8.27 percent over the same month last year.

The city of Wimberley collected $76,353.72 for the month, which is up almost $6,000 from the same month last year. In 2019, Wimberley has collected $463,033.89, which is up 2.81 percent.

The breakdown of where the money came from also shows signs of a strong sales month. The figures show that Current Period Collections, which removes payments collected from overdue audits and businesses that pay ahead leaving only sales made during the month, was responsible for the entire monthly growth. This means that sales during the month were actually up eight percent.

The city of Woodcreek, which does not rely heavily on sales tax allocations compared to the city of Wimberley, did not see an increase. Woodcreek received $3,989.55 for the month, which is down 5.82 percent compared to the same month last year. However, Woodcreek is up 13.8 percent in 2019, and Current Period Collections were almost stable during the month.

That has been pretty standard this year for sales within Wimberley ISD as the library’s portion of sales tax allocations is up 15.8 percent in 2019.

All told, the sales tax allocations show that sales in Wimberley Valley are up across the board this year compared to last year.
