Pat Rehmet appointed to Wimberley Council

Longtime Wimberley resident Pat Rehmet was appointed to the Wimberley City Council last week to take the place of Patricia Kelly Cantu, who resigned early this year.

“I’m not an old timer yet, but I’m getting there,” Rehmet said of his nearly 42 years living in the Wimberley Valley. “I think I bring a fresh outlook and a lot of common sense. I’ve got to come in there and learn about what is going on and make some knowledgeable decisions.”

Rehmet is a lawyer with a degree from the University of Houston, but he also has a degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. For most of his career, he has been a city attorney throughout Central Texas.

Rehmet began as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Alice in 1975 before moving to Wimberley and opening his law office. He became the City Attorney for the cities of Blanco and Johnson City in 1977. In 1990 he became the Senior Assistant City Attorney for the city of Austin where he stayed for 12 years.

Rehmet said that he has not been involved with city matters recently.

“I wasn’t involved,” Rehmet said. “I’ll never be on the sewer (as a customer). I tried to rebuild a law practice after the flood, and it took me three years. Now I’ve got it back, and it’s time to serve the community. I’m coming in with a clean slate to be honest with you. I will just see what comes up and try and make informed decisions.”

Rehmet said he hasn’t decided if he will run for office when his appointment finishes in May. Over the last few years, candidates for Wimberley elections have begun running in groups that essentially amount to local political parties. Rehmet said he is not involved with any of those political groups at this time.

“I’m not sure I’m like that – not yet,” Rehmet said. “ I’m coming in with a clean slate.”

While Rehmet has not served on any Board or Commission for the city of Wimberley, he was previously on the Ordinance Review Committee years ago.
