Native American dancers bring cultural heritage to the Wimberley Playhouse

A swirl of color. Dancing. Singing. Drumbeats. The Wimberley Players welcome everyone to the next free Saturday of Cultural Sharing event at the Wimberley Playhouse.

On Saturday Nov. 23 at 2:00 pm, we will welcome the Indigenous Cultures Institute of San Marcos, represented by members of an extraordinary group of dancers, Mitotiliztli Yaoyollohtil, which translates to Heart of the Warrior. All Cultural Sharing events are made possible by a matching Cultural District Grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts, and generous donors.

“Bring the children, as these events are especially for them,” said Bob Smith, Players vp/development. “The goal of the project is to increase understanding and appreciation of our neighbors’ backgrounds, though authentic Texas cultural traditions.”

Evelio Flores, leader of Heart of the Warrior, explained that this type of Native American dancing is called “danza,” and each danza group is centered in a family unit. Evelio is a realtor who lives in Dallas, while his family group is scattered over a 400-mile radius. They range in age from five years to mid-60s.

“Whenever we get together to rehearse or perform, we try to share our particular gifts,” he said. It might be dancing, singing or sewing. We each have specialties, but we enjoy teaching others whatever our gift is.”

David Bisett, president of the Players, said, “We are pleased and honored to bring partners like Heart of the Warrior to our stage. It’s an opportunity for all of us to experience more than an entertaining ethnic performance. We’ll learn the meaning behind the performance.”

As they dance to honor various elements of nature, performers dress to reflect their degree of experience, much like students of martial arts, who move from white belt to black belt for top achievers. Leader Evelio Flores’ elaborate regalia wears has a humbling effect. “Beginners start off with simple cotton garments. But when I wear significant regalia like this, with the same shape and pattern of my ancestors long ago, I better know what I’m doing!” he said.
