Making Wimberley even more beautiful

A big part of what makes Wimberley, Wimberley, is the way of life. “The Wimberley Way” is not something dreamed up as a marketing ploy. It is real. It means that we take care of our own. If something needs to be done, we’ll do it.

What it means is helping out neighbors just because it is the right thing to do. From the early days, when loose livestock needing to be rounded up, or more recently the devastating floods. Volunteering for the good of the community is in our DNA.

It’s the job of Keep Wimberley Beautiful and their volunteers to make it even prettier to boot. They are the ones behind the “Welcome To” signs with the Mill on it and other beautiful projects like the wildflowers surrounding the town in the spring, and the flags and displays for all the holidays.

They are offering the KWB Community Achievement Awards, which are grants from $200 to $2500 for qualifying beautification projects. Making the community a little bit nicer in your neck of the woods can be achieved, with a little help. Volunteering for your own neighborhood with an area that needs a little sprucing up or neglected for some time is one good volunteer project.

But really the individual projects are open to all, including organizations, church groups, businesses and individuals. KWB is reaching out to the community. One recent award helped with the new benches project down by the Cypress Creek Bridge. Applications for the Community Achievement awards must be in by August 31.

Keep Wimberley Beautiful also has a new “Adopt a Spot” program that allows a person or group to responsibility for a specific area and make sure it is provided for. This is somewhat similar to the TxDOT program of Adopt A Highway.

The best part of all is that KWB will supply you with a grant for the materials. After a short application and approval, they’ll supply you with everything you need including garbage bags. The one-year term means providing cleaning up and beautification for four times a year.

“All we ask is people to commit to four times a year, sign a simple contract and KWB will supply you with everything you need. You get a sign with your organization’s name,” KWB’s Ann Arendarczyk said. “The Jake Baccus family decided to Adopt a Spot both sides of Old Kyle Road. They were the first family to adopt…you’re able to name your own spot.”

Summer is a great time to get started on a Adopt a Spot and help keep Wimberley, like the sign says ,“a little bit of heaven.”
