Low-speed accident results in gazebo crash

A suspected medical emergency led to a car accident in downtown Wimberley last week.

Around 10 a.m. on September 22, a small SUV driving erratically through the Wimberley Square rear-ended a truck headed northbound on Ranch Road 12 at Mill Race Lane as the truck waited for the River Road stoplight to turn green.

The SUV then lurched into the center turn lane nearly striking an oncoming vehicle driven by a Wimberley firefighter.

“Our firefighter got out and got him stopped,” Czichos said. “He told him to put the car in park, and the driver didn’t respond. Evidently, he put it in neutral, and that is when the car started rolling back wards.”

The firefighter later reported that the driver appeared ill.

The SUV rolled backwards down Ranch Road 12 headed for Cypress Creek when it jumped the curb, crossed the sidewalk, went through the recently restored gazebo at the edge of Ozona Bank’s property and came to a stop.

“Luckily, there was a bench behind him that kept him from running off into Cypress Creek,” Czichos said. “He wasn’t but about three or four feet from dropping off the edge right there, which is about an eight foot drop off.”

No serious injuries were reported from the crash.
