Local student’s essay for DAR wins

A Wimberley eighth-grade student at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, Claire Horsey, has won the Jacob’s Well Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest.

The contest is open to all students in grades 5 through 8 and a winner is selected from each of the four grades to advance to the state level. State winners advance to the divisional level and divisional winners advance to the national level. Winners at each level win a certificate, a medal and a monetary award.

Cherie Dawson, the Chapter Regent of the Jacob’s Well DAR who presented the 8th grade level award to Miss Horsey on December 14 said, “We are honored to sponsor such an educational endeavor and to recognize the leaders of tomorrow.”

Essays were judged for their historical accuracy, organization and originality.

The DAR is a non-profit, nonpolitical women’s service organization with more than 185,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide. DAR chapters participate in projects to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism.
